It seems that the tough times in churchland continue. Ricky Maymi posted a few months back on the Seance mailing list hinting around the possibility of the band continuing into the future with a different lineup. And Steve himself implies that one or more members of the band may not want to continue at the 56 minute mark of the interview found here: http://valor23.blogspot.com.au/2013/08/steven-kilbey-true-artist-in-every.html
My completely hypothetical guess is a bit of a heartbreaker. Marty's relationship with Steve must have been tested after Steve openly complained about how the band had been managed under Marty and Tiare's stewardship. Add to this the damage Steve did to the relationship between the band and their American record company as a result of his vitriolic blog posts against Second Motion last year, my guess is that it's Marty who may want out. If this is the case, man, how sad. My understanding is that it was Marty who stood by Steve while he was struggling with his addiction to heroin. Just by reading between the lines over the years, it seems that the members of the church have never been the best of friends. But it would still be such a shame to see such a talented man leave if it's the result of a souring of their relationship.
Regardless of who it is and what their reasons are, it leaves us with a question: who or what is the church? It's a bit of a silly sounding statement, but to me the essence of the church is the combination of Steve Kilbey and magic guitars. Ideally, the guitarists should be Marty and Peter. But if one (or both?!) want out, I thing a replacement could and should be found - though finding the right guitarist(s) wouldn't be easy. Ricky Maymi himself would be a natural choice, and I think he could pull it off.
I'd love to hear what you think.
