Gold Afternoon Fix has always been one of my favorite Church albums, so I feel compelled to give a respect vote to this forgotten stepchild that remains hidden in the basement.
I bought Gold Afternoon Fix on the day of release here in 1990 and was initially underwhelmed with the album, as it was not the Bigger Better Starfish that I was expecting at the time. After listening to the CD for a couple of weeks, however, I developed a strong liking for the album and an even stronger respect for The Church. It seemed to me at the time that, with Gold Afternoon Fix, The Church were deliberately avoiding the need to cash in on the Top 40 success of Starfish and, instead, using that success to draw newfound fans deeper into their own weird world instead of being drawn into the expectations of the masses. Gold Afternoon Fix seemed to fall more in line with The Church's earlier material and it seemed to me to be a much more natural progression to Heyday than Starfish. Although it's apparent these days that my idealistic perception of The Church's motives doesn't quite gel with the reality of this stage in the band's history, I still believe that Gold Afternoon Fix was the right album released at the right time.
Kilbey's lyrics on Gold Afternoon Fix may be caustic at times, but the music throughout the album has a nicely pastoral sound that provided the soundtrack to many an afternoon drive through the back roads of rural Georgia where I grew up and where I still spend a lot of time visiting.
In fact, Gold Afternoon Fix sounds like it could have been recorded here in Georgia. Like R.E.M.'s similarly underrated album, Fables Of The Reconstruction, Gold Afternoon Fix sounds like an album specifically intended to be played while taking a Sunday afternoon drive through the north Georgia mountains or traveling through farmland in middle-of-nowhere south Georgia. I stated in my intro post here that I love the music of The Church because it makes me just want to look out the window and Gold Afternoon Fix is one album that is truly fitting of that description. The album is aptly titled in that it sounds best when played during a sunny afternoon traveling through rural landscapes.
"Metropolis" was a brilliant first single for the album, although it's strange that a song with such a title sounds the best when listening to out in the country. "Russian Autumn Heart"...well, there's a reason why I use this song for my username here...it's an incredible song. I have a real soft spot, though, for the ignored album tracks like "Essence", "Transient", "Laughing", "Disappointment", and "Fading Away".
There are flaws. The lyrics on "Terra Nova Cain" are a bit campy, "You're Still Beautiful" is too overtly scathing for a Church song, and "Grind" lacks the perfect album closure feel that "Hotel Womb" had on Starfish. Still, I never skip a song when I'm listening to Gold Afternoon Fix.
I was somewhat bewildered when I started seeing Gold Afternoon Fix on the "cut racks" of music stores just a few months after the album's release. I remember feeling a bit smug at the time, though, because I liked enjoying an album that most people just didn't quite get. I still feel that way.
