I have to disagree with those that dislike GAF. To give another perspective, I met The Church with Starfish, loved it so much that I got the LP of GAF as soon as I saw it. I was not disappointed, I liked it almost as much as Starfish, although at the time I didn't like Terra Nova Cain, Disappointment or You're Still Beautiful as much, they've grown on me. I loved Metropolis and City, and Russian Autumn Heart, and Essence, and Transient, and Fading Away (still one of my favorites). I did not appreciate the melancholy of Grind until I grew older. Later one of my brothers gave me the CD as a present, the CD bonus tracks were a nice extra for me and I liked them immediately. I still listen to it more than to pre-Heyday material.
Not being familiar with the previous Church material I wasn't expecting something specific and enjoyed GAF for what it had to offer. Not being musically educated, and giving more attention to the guitar melody on top than to the percussions (as I always do), I couldn't tell that a drum machine was used, it was never an issue for me.
Starfish and GAF together made me a long time fan, enough to grab previous albums at first sight, and keep looking for those I didn't have, and to keep buying every new album they have made and will make. My experience in this seems similar to that of many that like GAF and posted in this thread. If not for anything else GAF should always be hailed for keeping the faith of post-Starfish fans, and even attracting more.
Now that I'm more familiar with the back catalogue of The Church, and after reading some posts here (and a thread on this back when I lurked in Seance in 1997-98 ) I can see how old time fans would feel dissapointment in that what for them was the essence of the Church sound seemed to be fading away from their records, and that it would be a grind for them to try and like it.
Oh Gold Afternoon Fix, to me you're still a beautiful album!
