Heyday.

Well...

Heyday.

This is where they really began to be MY Church.

Wow...

HEYDAY!

There is nothing, absolutely nothing I don't like about that album. Except not including a lyric sheet, so i'd sing "drunken moon" instead "drumkit moon" for years.

> Marty has said that he didn't like the brass
> and I agree with him.
> It seems superfluous.
> The Church are not about brass.

Ah...the brass....nag nag nag naggle naggle nag. There's much more to complain about later Church albums than the Heyday brass.... Louisiana Hiss? HOB cover design? Please!!

This album stands out as totally immaculate in my humble ears. It's part of the Wonderfully Produced Troika (Heyday, P=A, MATS). It sounds like drowning in a swirl of tinsel, liquid stars, golden honey while running through Winter Wonderland with the love of your life.

The best thing is you don't realize the production. Earlier producers tried to occupy the foreground..."hey, of course it's The Church, but who is The Fuckin Church when *I* am NICK LAUNAY, and i hope you'll notice every single flatulence i let go in the studio". You'll always hear earlier albums with the production clearly noticeable. Heyday's production is understated, gentleman-like, decent, crystalline and wonderful. I bet Peter Walsh spent much effort in hiding himself and presenting the band like the diamond in its platinum mounting/socket/frame (word?).

There's crescendo, decrescendo, there are nuances, there are the textures, there is so much totally new musicality and craftsmanship and pure genius. The whole record sounds like a throbbing heart ready to conquer the world. OK, there's the mullets. But I'd grow a BIG mullet to show the world how I love Heyday (good that you can also demonstrate it wearing a paisley shirt). Maybe they promised the devil to grow mullets if he helped them to forge a record so sublime, so pop-godlike, so... ok. It's so drugged, but SO clear and transparent...

Myrrh

Emerald!
Haunt!!
In Overdrive!!
Nightmare descents...!!!

The imagery! And SK is SINGING! Not Bowie-ing, talking, no no no, he must be on his way, and he is SINGING! Music like liquid silver, pearly dew-drops, rushing, moving, hurrying...these are not guitars, these are the strings of heaven!

Tristesse

What a perfect, perfect song. Notice the big ambitus of the vocal melody. There's more opera in Tristesse's first verse than in Freddie Mercury's life...: "..greeeeew the strangest fruit". Made me look up a lot of words ending with -ess in 1992.

Already Yesterday

The 12th song i knew. Another aria. Another golden foil of great sounds. OK, you might bitch about the aahh-aahh-aahh--ahh choir, but I'm not!!

Columbus

Coolest part - the unaccompaigned drum beats!

Happy Hunting Ground

The colours of the paisley shirts set to music. PK and MWP are the Masters of The Universe!! Swell, delay, decay, attack...

Tantalized

Leaves U2 in the Donegal dust. Imagine this without the brass section..no no no. What SK is doing with his voice is totally amazing. Exploded with the same vigour in Berlin 1998...

Disenchanted

Beautiful Simplicity, like Nothing Inside, Othertime...but the glossy treatment it gets...

Night Of Light

usually regarded as filler. I want to kiss the song on the forehead.

Youth Worshipper

filler II. Do i really care? It sits in its place. Don't remove it!

Roman

How cool, leaving the album on this dark, desperate place. Never come back again.
