Neil Finn

Heatherspace told me the new Neil Finn live album ("7 Worlds Collide" I think is the name) was wonderful, and so acting on her recommendation I bought it (too bad she doesn't get commision).

Wow.

And when Johnny Marr makes a guest appearance and sings "There Is A Light...", a song I haven't heard in ages and eons, it makes it hard to believe that the person 15 years ago, in her bedroom playing "The Queen Is Dead" to death, is the same person standing in my skin right now.

But I wax nostalgic. This album is great. I don't usually like live albums, but this one has an incredible sound and clarity.

On a side note, I remember in the early, infant days of MTV, Split Enz had a video called "Dirty Creature" which features someone getting his head cut off. It spooked me. Does anyone else remember that?

Re: Neil Finn

Sis, so glad you liked it! I had a feeling you would -- like I said to you Tuesday, I don't like live albums in general, but this one is just outstanding from start to finish. Every time we play it, someone buys it -- seriously. Gorgeous. Cannot recommend it enough.

And COMMISSION, eh?! If I were getting paid per unit for the Church album, I'd be good to go.

(Neil)Are you joking (I/V)No (Neil)(..pause..) Well I dont know whether or not you can print this but "wank" is a term which has to do with some naughty thing little boys aren't supposed to do in the bathroom. (I/V)You mean shit in the basin.

Re: Neil Finn

Saw the awesome double billing of Ed Harcourt and Neil Finn at the 9:30 Club in DC Thursday night -- what an astounding show. I've been blessed to see a lot of performers I consider legendary or semi-legendary in the past few years, and all were special in their own way, but I took such a feeling of communion and spirit and wholeness from this show -- it was just good for the soul, you know?

Amanda, you were right -- Ed Harcourt=total cutie. ;) I was most impressed by his stage presence, though. He was witty, snarky, and a spot-on performer. He played soooooooo much new material, though, which was frustrating because I could never hear the titles of the songs very clearly. I only remember one new title which was "Angels On My Body", and was dedicated to Neil Finn, who came out onto the balcony and listened, then bowed graciously to Ed when it ended. The second song he pulled out was this full-on mariachi-flavored number that made me very impatient for his new album -- it's going to be a killer if the new material is any indication. The funniest moment was when he said "This next one is called 'She Fell Into My Arms'" and there was this lone loud hoot, and he replied, "Thanks, it's nice to be loved." Hehehe.

Neil's set was amazing -- here's the setlist:

When You Come [him solo with an acoustic]
Private Universe [accompanied by Lisa Germano on viola, then gradually the entire band joined him]
Anytime [my favorite song off the new album, dedicated to Lester the Dog]
Driving Me Mad [another favorite from the new record]
One Step Ahead
Loose Tongue [the place really started moving on this one]
Wherever You Are [dedicated to "those who can't be with us this evening"]
Sinner
Pineapple Head [with a mindblowing bass solo by Sebastian Steinberg]
Last To Know
Distant Sun
Human Kindness
I Got You [I was not expecting this one at all! The crowd went nuts!)
She Will Have Her Way [Ed Harcourt playing percussion, fantastic.]

Encore:
Weather With You [Ed Harcourt played piano and sang a verse with Neil.]
A song by Gershwin [Neil's aunt and uncle were in attendance, so the song was dedicated to them -- heartbreakingly beautiful -- his uncle gave him a standing ovation, and Neil stood and wiped tears away.]
Mean To Me [by request]
A song by the guitar player, Sean
World Where You Live [possibly my favorite moment of the show -- after it was over, the band left the stage, and Neil stayed with an acoustic and led the crowd in a singalong of its chorus, which led into him saying he'd like to invite Heidi from the audience to sing back-up on his next song, which was...]
Fall At Your Feet [Neil on acoustic, this girl with a gorgeous voice from the audience, and the entire crowd singing every word -- I got all sniffly -- a very powerful and emotional moment.]
Take A Walk
Tuna [a song by Lisa Germano]
Lullaby Requiem
Don't Dream It's Over [Again, Neil alone with an acoustic, accompanied by the crowd singing every word and a member of the crew on organ -- beautiful -- called Jesuskrishna during it.]

I think I am officially obsessed with this man and his music now. I've never quite seen a show like it, and can't wait to see it again and again. This man's songs and voice are truly a treasure.

Re: Neil Finn

Ah Heather I'm jealous , what a review ! and what a show !

I'm not one of Neil Finn's biggest fans but I do have a lot of time for him. He is an immense talent , one of the best songwriters ,extremely consistant, and his voice generates so much warmth.

Read this article once where jounalists were saying that The Beatles should re-form (this was prior to George Harrison's death) and N. Finn should fill in John Lennon's role. One of the writers said ' Fuck it he should replace Macca !!!!! '

Interesting to read that Lisa Germano is actually in N Finn's band. I never got down to buying any of her albums. I must say though that her collaboration with OP8 (members of Giant Sand) left a lasting impression on me.

and....how is JK these days ?

take care

Re: Neil Finn

Oh Heather, that must have been an amazing night.
I am so completely jealous. Hopefully there exists a soundboard recording of this show.

On a quasi-related note, Deacon12 and myself had to change our band name from Longhouse because of Lisa Germano. Turns out she was in a band called Longhouse circa 1989. With the likes of Anton Fier, they were an underground session supergroup or something. They did one album only.

still very jealous, Noel

Re: Neil Finn

JJean, I'm not entirely sure how Lisa Germano and Neil Finn came to work together, but I think she's a wonderful addition to his band -- the poor woman was bouncing from violin to viola, back to keyboards, then to guitar. She's got a warm voice, too, which I love -- her backing vocals complement Neil's well, I think.

On a peripherally-related note, if you look at the liner notes of One Nil/One All, a few of the songs are credited to N. Finn / W. Melvoin -- that's Wendy of Wendy & Lisa fame. I heard they were both in his band for a while -- anyone know what happened with that? That might have been interesting to see.

Noel, if I find a bootleg of the show, you will be first to know. I saw quite a few people below me with digital cameras and whatnot, so I'm sure someone managed to sneak a DAT recorder in. Also, I hear Whisper Mode is a grrrrreat band name. :p

Jean, it's funny you mentioned Giant Sand -- I've been listening to Cover Magazine religiously lately -- forgot to add it to my current listening list. I've also been listening to Howe Gelb's Confluence a lot, too.

And JK is doing well. He's trying to finish his Church cover and work six days a week as well as juggling other details. I think he'll be more relaxed now that he has his copy of Remindlessness -- of course he's refusing to listen to it until he can, ahem, "observe tradition." ;) He was going to try and get to a functioning computer this weekend so he could pop on here, but I don't know how likely that is. I'll let him know you were asking about him, Jean. :)

Arrgh... I'm so sorry that I had to turn down Heather's invitation to this show. Of course, Matt's birthday does take priority.

I didn't think it was worth mentioning -- I mean, he does make pretty big steps...

Re: Neil Finn

Heather... so glad Ed lived upto the expectations I had set up for him!

And Neil Finn... I still find it strange, as it was only on the release of 7 World's Collide, that I realised how widely admired Neil is, internationally. I had thought he was just known in Aus/NZ. Crowded House were my favourite band, before the Church entered my life, so I will always have a soft spot for Neil.

I will be sure to catch him live next time... no hesitating.

Re: Neil Finn

Amanda, Neil sold out every single one of his shows here, and if the crowd during Split Enz songs is any indication, there are plenty of hardcore fans State-side. But I think he's been brought back into public consciousness by 7 Worlds Collide . I don't know a single person who hasn't been bowled over by that album or video.

I just learned the Gershwin tune he did Thursday was "I Can't Get Started." Lovely. He said it was his father's favorite song of all time, as well.

And Reid, stop thinking too much. I think you should concentrate on reinforcing the foundation of your house and making sure your car is in tip-top shape. Not long now...evil snicker.
