Trinary has really taken me by surprise. Not that I expected that Charcoal Ed were going to be mediocre , but I didn't expect them to be this good either.
I've heard the album a few times now and it keeps getting better. I keep coming back for more. HotelWomb has given me the chance to share my enthusiasm for The Church ,there have been many plus points too and a precious one is corresponding with some lovely folk here , another one listening to their music.
One thing I've really enjoyed though is , finding many Church fans that share my passion for instrumental music. With Reid aka Charcoal Ed we've got someone here of immense talent , making it.
Trinary starts off with an ambient feel to it. Alpha is an outstanding number , a perfect way to set up the tone for the rest of the album. Green Means Go & Trinary (title track) are also ambient numbers but more uptempo.
The drum beat on GMG is a bit too obvious and radio friendly for my liking. At this point I thought the whole album was going to take a familiar direction , which had me worried. I'll be blunt enough to say that tracks 2 and 3 are the weak point of 'Trinary.'
' Future Shock ' finds Charcoal Ed back in form. Again ambient and trancey, this is a great number.' 'Millagra ' has one of those fucked up Third Eye Foundation drum 'n' bass beats which I thrive on. This track is excellent. Its dark , disturbing and funky !
'Run' as the title indicates , kicks ass, its bloody Underworld , Van Dyk , one of those tracks that you lose yourself to , at them parties. Yes please !
We find ourselves back to dark, mischievous electronica on 'Consumption.' Tracks 4-8 ' are the albums high point . Consumption leads us to 'Lost Not Found ' which is a killer track. This is wonderful .....think Joy Division drum beat.....no think ...early Sisters of Mercy drumbeat.......no early Mogwai drumbeat...with a mesmerizing bassline that makes the track totally hypnotic. This could be an electronic MATS. The album is worth obtaining for this track alone.
I like the way the album is put together.
Track 1 -ambient 2/3 - uptempo ambient 4/5/6/7/8/- more experimental- 9/10- again ambient.
The albums goes full circle. The last two tracks fit the scene perfectly.'Everything is Different' has a brooding melancholic beat which accompanies the piano perfectly.Another awesome track . The closing number 'Heartbeat' relies again on those chord progressions that started off the album. Its pleasant rather than challenging , but its very good and the longer it stays the more it warms up the room.

I'd rate Trinary 8.5/10
