What can I say?
There are music snobs, there are art snobs, then there are language snobs...
I'm sort of a language snob... I certainly understand spelling variations and how sight sound confusions can be easy in English (much more than in Spanish). I'm actually not bothered by people making those mistakes.
I started this pointing out some interesting spelling mistakes that actually change the meaning, sometimes tremendously. I'm fascinated by the written language, sometimes bothered by people over-reliance in spell checkers (both in English and Spanish). Maybe it's just that I read to much, and that helps me notice spelling mistakes, for some reason they jump to my eyes.
I try my best to avoid making them, but I'm becoming lazier in checking my typing (which I usually do, I even preview my posts), and I tend to make typing mistakes.
The fact is that I consider cautious writing a virtue, even if I tend to not to be that concerned for the informal writing that bulletin boards and chat represent. I even forgive websites
but for some reason it bothers me, even in English, to see newspapers misusing the language.
It's interesting how some of the things we call misspellings now may become the correct spelling with time and usage.
