(I actually hate that phrase and the ad campaign that launched, that's not a pet peeve).
The problem with the common citizens misspelling is that when them or their kids become lawyers and politicians and have to write legal documents they just couldn't write well. Of course they can just pass a law making proper spelling unnecessary, even illegal.
Intentional misspelling for effect, typing mistakes, lack of proper spelling due to unfamiliarity with a second language, even mistaks due to carelessness sometimes (as long as care is taken when neede) those are acceptable. But misspelling due to ignorance is a cause for worry, in any language, I also worry about the ignoramuses that edit the newspapers in Mxico.
And yes, English spelling can be hard, but people have been able to learn it and use it correctly for years and years.
There was an essay written in 1946 for Astounding magazine (now known as Analog), by Dolton Edwards, it's an excellent look at this issue, quite funny, it has actually been mutated, modified, misattributed and reposted in several forms in this internet age, but you can find the original online too, is called
Meihem in ce Klasrum
. (Dolton Edwards, BTW is mentioned elsewhere as a "sudonim" for W.K. Lessing)
