My daughter attends a great public school where 50% of the students come from non-English speaking backgrounds. Amongst 530 students there are 50 different nationalities. Last year each child in my daughter's class did a project on their own family's history and cultural background (the stories were amazing). I believe being exposed to cultural diversity among their peers is the most enriching lesson of all for these children.

This year they are studying early Australian history in-depth (convicts, explorers etc.) Ever heard of Count Edmund de Strzelecki ? Me neither, til I had to help make a model of Mt Kosciusko.
