Steve, I thought that it was the US that exported its leftovers...
You're right, travel is a luxury that not anyone can afford, and the muti-cultural nature of many large US cities makes it look as if you don't need to get out, but that's an illusion, let me tell you. It's as if I were to tell you that I know the US because I've visited a few cities in Texas and lived in Houston, I know for a fact that I don't really know the US that well, it's too vast and diverse to be contained and represented by a few cities (N.B. I've been out of Texas to a few northern cities). The whole world is even more vast to be contained and represented in ethnic neighborhoods... or in Epcot center.
I personally like to travel, it's great to discover the beauty of other cities, even if only for a short tour, and I think that to live in another culture for some time is eye opening, both for your own views of your country and your views of the other country and even the world. I also thought that I could find everything I needed (except for a good graduate program in Chemistry) in my country...
But I understand and respect that many people don't feel the need to travel, and know that to be true for people from Mxico too, that don't even get out of their hometowns to visit other cities, much less outside Mxico, and I know that some say that travelling outside of your country is an unnecessary luxury until you have really travelled and known your own country.
European travel seems much easier, smaller countries, years of interconnecting rails and highways, to travel in the US and getting out of it almost always involves air travel, making it more expensive, or driving can take too long in comparison, more than a whole day to drive across the US coasts, versus 10 hours to cross France.
I'm almost sure the Europeans put up with gas taxes for the simple reason that many don't need a car to move within their cities, not even to travel across the continent, if you can afford the luxury of a car you can afford the tax.
I actually find unfair the criticism that US citizens are self-centered because they don't travel (even if I think that the US culture is the most self-referential one of the world, and thus it does display some self-centeredness at times).
