Ok. From the first play I knew that I had found something special. I felt like I was in on a cool little secret that nobody knew. A year later Starfish was released and they became if not widely known, then somewhat known. Starfish was different, but thats for another thread. As soon as I heard those chiming guitars fading up and leading into the first verse of Myrhh, I knew that I was onto something. Then that first line, "emerald haunt in overdrive, nightmare descent into jericho city, camel dust heralds our arrival" I KNEW that these guys were special. This is late 86, early 87 and nobody that I had been exposed to would or could write something like that. Unique
1. Myhrr- first, what a song title for someones first exposure to the band. I recall thinking to myself what the hell does that mean? I still don't know. My definition of it is dawn in the desert just before the stars fade to grey. What an opener. The guitars wind into one another, the song drives and pumps. I thought it was a classic on my first listen and 21 years later I feel the same.
2. Tristesse- again before playing it I was ruminating over what these guys were on about. Is Tristesse a Roman goddess, a girlfriend, a place? Again great lyrics and great vocals sung by Kilbey. Subtle lead by Koppes and great harmonies from both Koppes and MWP. Serene, subtle, beautiful. Another classic. The acoustic version on EMD is just as beautifully done. Timeless.
3. Already Yesterday- Again great song. Love the bits of surrealism in the lyrics mixed with the fantasy and the everyday. Could do without the big goth ah's but just a minor annoyance. Enough great things going here.
4. Columbus- driving and dreamy. Every time I hear it I start tapping the toes or bobbing the head a little. Love the resigned tone in which he drags out "oh, columbus" One of my favorites and a somewhat underated and forgotten song. Superb.
5. Happy Hunting Ground- Is what it is. A lil' changeup
6. As You Will- Another great song. Chugging rythym guitar. Spot on delivery of the vocal by PK with lyrics that are a little more straight forward but by no means weak. Fits well and was a great way to end side 1 in those days.
7.Tantalized- The rocker. Love the way the first line is up front and right in your face, "GOD, I've been asleep so long, I've been away". Also love the little fluorish on the word away. This song just rocks, likes it's just being held in check but things could explode at any moment. I never minded the horns. Unique
8. Disenchanted- Beautiful. The guitar in the first verse before being joined by the other at the chorus is beautiful and fits the mood of the lyrics perfectly.
9. Youth Worshiper- This one has worn since the days of youth. Seems a bit sappy, trite and predictable now.
10. Night of Light- Kind of ho hum until the chorus kicks in with a double tracked Kilbey vocal. Kind of build, descends, and then builds again. I don't believe it's filler as others do. Seems that too much thought went into it to be filler, tho I'm aware that's not the definition
11. Roman- Love the way it builds slowly and then the electric kicks in. Immediately it sets a kind of menacing and dark mood. Great closer for the original but I had the copy that closed with
12. The View- I know that some here kind of slag off MWP's and PK's tunes. I find their contributions essential to every album. There are very very few of eithers that I dislike. I do not dislike this one but it's not one of MWP's best. Again it is what it is. The musicianship and guitars interacting save it for me.
