THE Church have been forced to cancel two southeast Queensland shows after lead singer Steve Kilbey was admitted to hospital with an unspecified illness.

"It could be related something to something viral ... but it's more than a cough, put it that way," guitarist Marty Willson-Piper told Confidential.

"We think he's probably going to be in hospital tonight and we just didn't have the insensitivity, even if he was feeling better, to take him from his hospital bed straight to the airport."

Willson-Piper said the band, which is touring off the back of its 23rd album Untitled #23 and new EP Pangaea, was "so disappointed that we can't play these Queensland shows".

"We've just been in Melbourne, we did three great shows, we've got new songs, a great selection of old ones and we were just really on a roll," he said.

Fans who bought tickets for shows at the Sands Hotel at Maroochydore on Friday and The Zoo in Brisbane on Saturday can seek a full refund from the venues.

The band is still scheduled to play in Sydney on March 15 but make-up dates for Queensland were not mentioned.
