FLESH

This is an ambient piece that focuses primarily on soundscaping--on slowly building the atmosphere and shifting the tone colours of the instruments through a variety of articulations and effects to create some rather stirring changes. Together with the acute brightness of the 12-string guitar and the synth trumpets the song becomes an impressionist piece. Intentionally, and tastefully, the musicians underplay their instruments leaving spaces between the notes--complementing each other and creating textures that are rich and full yet subtle: subtle piano, subtle arpeggios on the guitar in the background; and even though the chords are tamed they're also mildly tempered--played with a vibrato effect and delay for prolonged sustain, thus filling the voids and creating ambience. Harmonically and structurally this piece is quite simple as the chord selection is standard and fairly repetitive, but the subtle changes made through the instruments create variety in the piece, and interesting new flavours are added to the mix with each new verse.

In the third verse the strings add more texture and create a feeling of building (peaking). Call-and-response style vocals are also present making a change from the previous two verses, e.g. 2:18 "Life is short…just you listen…", etc.

The chorus that follows is filled with musical goodies such as the counterpoint melody between the two vocal lines at 2:25, and the harmonised vocal line (which is very reminiscent of Beatles style harmonies--and even vocals) at 2:32.

Tuning? Tooning to temperance

So quietly flows the Don

But where have all the flowers gone?

The dollar, McCann and big Jim Goff

The Cossacks, the tarriers and M Sholokhov?
