Posts: 4 (11/26/2003 03:13) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None Every new Church album I never like the first time I hear it - because each is such a departure from the last - but the more I listen to them and the more I get to understand them - the more I love them - and that's exactly what's happening now - I'm still getting into it - but I'm really loving - especially those bits in SIS like "They say at the speed of light the particles get very excited - well out here the universe is bursting and we're all so very excited" (paraphrasing) and the bit about the lift being swifter! And Marty's (?) Eastern guitar in the theatre and it's double --- anyway they've done it again - a challenging and uplifting album - they are one of thiose rare beasts now - a true band that is developing and discovering things for the first time Scot McPhie

"This is too pretty to be The Church!" - my mother in reference to the intro of Telepath while in the car with my brother on Thanksgiving, in between turkeys. My mother, who has reluctantly (afterimage notwithstanding) endured my overplaying every church album till I moved out. She says Afterimage is beautiful. "...." - my brother as he turned UP Nothing Seeker. My brother who says little, said more with this than any words as I was waiting the whole trip for him to pop the CD out and switch to the UF - FSU pre-game analysis. "Is this REM?" a co-worker mid-June, as I played FY in a common area. This I found odd, obviously, but I think she might have just been trying to be nice, as in making conversation. But the funny part is ny boss who said "He listens to a lot of weird shit," after I responded, "No, it's the Church!" causing a confused scowl. Just thought I would share these "fly-on-the wall" reviews. b

Many hiccups later, I still maintain that this is one of the loveliest Church albums ever. Where can they go from here? Personally, I would love to see them go the route of "MATS" x 14. In other words, a dozen or so trax of absolute "out-there-ness". Make it a double disc w/ liberal doses of MWP & PK & insane poetry readings from Steve & a few space jams . James Hill

The next church album = 2CD with Peter and Marty's space grunge guitars & backing vox, 6 or so 10-15 min tracks per disc, Steve reading off something new he wrote, all improv, only with Tim layering over lightly in the studio with some electronics in the quiet spots.......sorry, FY thread. But thanks for stoking some imaginations WS2003! b If it happened and it's called "Navigator of Holland" I'll quit my job and walk to Key West with the last of my cash spent on extra batteries for my walkman and something lysergic.....sit on the beach, fast, and wait for something to happen.

"Sealine" is very reminiscent of "Anesthesia ()" in it's set up. It kind of begins in a murmer, roars and then fades to black. "telepath" is the first keeper for me. "See Your Lights" I really don't understand... at all. "Appalatia" in the spirit of "A New Season" with vocal harmonies. "I Kept Everything" and "Nothing Seeker" rock! "Reversal." What is this song? This has to be the worst Church song ever. The electronically enhanced vocals?? What? I mean, this is the Church, not Madonna, or Cher. As a drummer, I love the drumming of Tim, as it's very imaginative and improvisational, and his production ability is excellent. However, each album threatens to get more and more electronic and that worries me. The thing that drew me to the Church was it's yin/yang guitar work and Steve's vocals. Blah, blah blah... I'm going on way to long about that song, but I don't like it. And it won't grow on me. "Summer" is alright, a fitting ending to a good at times, horrible at one point, and excellent at times Church record. If I had to rate it against other Church recordings this would rate above Heyday at third to last (Disc one in Parallel Universe -- OUCH!). But like Heyday there were some classics, as on this one. I liked them all at first. Reversal's ok for me, sort of a wink and nod extension from the Freaky Conclusions closer. b

I'll even reluctantly confess that I did like the vocal effects. And welcome Marskers, introduce yourself or just keep posting. One of these days I'll post my review of FY here... in the meantime I'll just say that I love it, best Church album up until itself (next may be even better).

There were a few things on it which were familiar and a few things on it which saw the guys trying something new. I particularly liked "Sealine", "Maya" and "Telepath" but it didn't immediately knock my socks off. I found the sound distinctly muddy and thought to myself, "I wish they would stop letting Tim produce their albums and get a proper producer in". Now, having listened to the album more and seen the band playing these songs live I am beginning to understand how absolutely remarkable "Forget Yourself" really is. It is one of those albums that take some time to appreciate but when you finally reach that point - wow! It's worth the effort. And the production isn't really that bad. . . . . I had the same feelings about "After Everything, Now This" initially but repeated listening revealed the beauty and brilliance of this album. I also found "Hologram of Baal" took some work but enjoy it immensely now. I have found The Church's albums since "Sometime Anywhere" to have demanded more of me as a listener. I would descibe these albums as great, vast oceans of music into which one must dive and go swimming. You can't just put them on and tap your toes happily as you could with an album like "Starfish". I've been revisiting some early Church recently, listening to "Hindsight", and when you listen to "Forget Yourself" and stack it up next to those tracks from the early eighties, the degree of growth and development in the songwriting and soundscaping of the band is just phenomenal. That is why, for me, The Church is a truly great band. They have weathered the ups and downs of twenty-three years and continued to grow as artists and are making music in the sort of space that very few bands ever make it to. The Church is above and beyond the market, above and beyond "pop music". Steve, Marty, Peter, Tim (and let's not forget Richard) have created a body of work that transcends rock will continue to be listened to for decades.

Maven Posts: 41 (02/07/2004 17:02) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I know we all have opinions, but c'mon, I know a lot of you fell in love with Thc Churchs ability to transport you you away with catchy jangly atmospheric rock, and yes sometimes pop. The past several albums have been an excursion in my opinion, a way of stretching out for the band creatively, now I feel like Forget Yourself is more of return to what they do best, sure it sounds different, but a learned ear can hear alot of subtleties harkening back to pre Starfish days. That said, I think its all good, and Forget Yourself is quite possibly the best album since Starfish.

I feel that FY is the follow-up album to HOB that's a few years late. And I don't mean this in a bad way at all, because HOB is one of my favorite Church albums ever. But I really don't see how FY is that much of a jump. It's more like building upon the sound they first created on HOB. I've been debating whether or not to get it, but I don't have a 5.1 surround unit to listen to that side. However if the regular CD version side of it was remastered somewhat, I might consider getting it for that reason.

The production on Uninvited Like the Clouds is top notch, quite a quantum leap better than on this release.

It is definitely a lot clearer and while listening to it on stereo headphones with the 5.1 mix (but mixed into two channels) I hear a whole new life in the album. I believe the 2003 release will collect dust while this version I will re-master and make into my new stereo copy. Although you can tell how some of the music was enhanced to spread out over the 5.1 spectrum this does not ruin and exceeds the original recording.

I liked SK's analysis of this recording that he gave at the Shriek movie screening in San Francisco last month. He said that one of the reasons the production sounded muddled was that he would have these bursts of creativity that wouldn't wait for all of the sound equipment to be in place. He'd say "Start recording NOW" and he got this brilliant stuff down on less than perfect sound recordings. (At least this is what I thought he said.) It made sense at the time, because I thought there was a lot of brilliant stuff on FY.

When I listen to this album I only listen to the songs I like. Its got GREAT songs and "BAD" songs in equal parts. Again, Tim Powles took care of the production, and again, a disaster in sonic terms. Kilbeys vocals dispersed in a muddy noise of guitars, all messed up. ISIDORE came the same year and it was to see God. 3.5/5

One of their best. song in space- blah. not interested. An ill advised attempt at a hit. theatre and double- OK. kind of blends in. Not too shabby. telepath- solid little number. perhaps one of the finest post millenium tunes for the band. I really hate the beach boy intro though. see your lights- dreadful. just plain wrong for a church record. lay low - same as see your lights. What is the church trying to be Korn? maya- good song, but doesnt move me the way it does some other wombers. appalatia- Ive never been too fond of this one. It does have some good stuff in it though. (should I get on with Rolling Stone or what!) june- fabulous tune. just a little gem in the middle. I love this song to pieces. dont you fall- great little builder of a tune. I love the way this song progresses. excellent track. i kept everything- great kilbey track. I loved this the first time I heard it. nothing seeker- great little rocker. angry tune. very well done. reversal- dismal attempt at sounding clever. why do they do this stuff? summer- good closer. A little on the boring side. However, a glass of wine, a vicatin, a pinner of the dank, and a recliner make this song very special. Overall this record suffers from two things. One, the production is unacceptable. Just really muddy and compressed. It sounds like my speakers are blown or that I spilled aunt jamima on the disc itself. Terrible, unforgiveable production. Two, the band was suffering an identity crisis on this record. They were caught trying to fit in again. Some wonderful tracks that are even better live (because they are opened up and not compressed like on the album) and a little punch to boot. But in the end it is a filler record. I dont think the boys thought this one out enough. If you subtract reversal, lay low, song in space, and see your lights and replace them with Jazz, Illusion Mysteries, Nervous Breakthrough, and Crashride- I think you have a much better album. Likewise, ULTC would be better (TO ME) if you dropped peters song, space needle, overview and untoward and replaced them with snowfaller, pantechnion, Ionian blues, and Anthemx.

I listened to Forget Yourself, and it honestly took me a few tries to get through it all. I left it for a while and when I went back, I loved it considerably. I think, and its hard to say because I haven't yet judged all of the Church's records, that this is one of the best by them. It flows perfectly, nothing really seems out of place on it except maybe Reversal or I Kept Everything. Sealine is an incredible song, and the one reason I love it so much has to do with very subtle sounds that flow through the background. The opening of Song in Space reminds me of an opening song to a James Bond movie (has that kind of importance in the intro), but Telepath, Appalatia and June are all beautiful songs. Law Low is a great sounding song, though I think the lyrics dont really match up to the song itself. Summer took a while to like, but seems to be a perfect closer. I think most Church albums are considerablly better than a majority of music thats produced. They all seem, to me, to be masterpieces in their own way and Forget Yourself stands out. Its an album that flows beautifully and those are cd's I love to death; the ones I can put on and listen from start through to the finish.
