Only part that bothers me is the "dream in black and white" line. Terra Nova Cain- very cool rocker. Love the guitar on this one City- one of my fave church tunes. Signature church right here. Monday morning- hey, I like it! Russian Autumn Heart- oh, you again. ho hum. Essence- required church youre still beautiful- silly indeed transient- horrible song Dissapointment- great tune and it could have been better. laughing- quintessential church fading away- love this one too! grind- I dont know... Nice guitar but forced chorus. Kind of aggrivating but with some nice qualities too. This has the makings of a truly great record. i wish they were a little more together at this time. It seems the mood of the band and the problems they were facing crept into this album a bit. However, there is still a lot of magic here. Undeniably the Church.
From reading your critique I take it that MWP's and PK's songs don't do much for you. To each their own, but for me, RAH and Transient are essential. Both are as good as anything else on the album. Maybe I'm in the minority here but I pretty much always enjoy messrs Wilson-Piper and Koppes contributions to Church albums. Without their contributions their albums probably would not make the same impact on me. I like the fact that this is a "band" in the truest sense of the word. All contributing. They wouldn't be the Church if it was different. I always welcome the few songs that each contribute. They provide a different perspective, a different listening experience in a way and I prefer it that way.
