Yeah, I'm talking money here people (well at least for most states in the US)!
I got a call Friday from my friendly county treasurer who told me that my dad was on the state unclaimed funds list. (OK, now I know it's weird for the county treasurer to call, but I live in a sparsely populated county and we have to get our kicks somehow. Also, she said my dad had helped her get elected -- I was afraid to ask how...) Oh, good, I think, a couple of hundred dollars can come in handy -- then she tells me the amount. It is thousands of dollars, more than I made last year (granted I didn't make a whole lot, but I was still shocked)! I also have to split it with my siblings, but a third of that amount is still a great windfall.
Now, my dad has been dead for over nine years and money is still popping up on these unclaimed funds lists (there were two amounts listed for him -- the huge one and a more normal $63 one). And even before he died, he had money on the list (I ask you, who forgets to cash a paycheck? But he did, so years later, we found it for him.)
So take a look, you might find some cash. Just do a search for unclaimed funds in the state you live in (or where you might have money -- insurance premiums, paychecks, forgotten bank accounts, etc.). If you find something, a little paperwork to prove who you are, and you get your long lost money (minus the ubiquitous administrative fee, of course). Happy hunting!
