Greetings my fellow Wombers.
I need help of a horticultural sort. I know many of you have experience with herbs (!), but what I'm curious about are hedge plants.
I intend to plant a straight-line hedge over fairly level ground. My desire is for a bit of enhanced privacy and some drama for the front yard.
I expect 3 to 5 feet wide and hopefully reaching
-eventually- 5 to 8 feet high.
My questions are simple:
Evergreen or deciduous? And why?
I'm partial to evergreens in that I don't want to rake heaps of leaves in the fall and have a hedge of sticks through the Winter. My sister told me that evergreen hedges are havens for mosquitoes. I hope that's incorrect information.
I have considered, in no certain order:
American Arborvitae -I like the pyramidal shape and density
various Holly bushes -uncertain about their care, etc.
Privet hedge -sturdy and thick
Purple leaf plum hedge -I'm intriqued by this colorful choice but I haven't seen a PLP hedge in person or even a decent photo...
I've seen some clever evergreen screens in which the trees retain their slender, conical shape yet still form a virtually inpenetrable fence. Hemlocks? Yews? I don't know what species...
I intend to replace the bushes in front of my house with what hedge plant I use also.
Any assistance/information will be appreciated.
I need to begin planting soon, sadly.
Cheers, Noel
