Now that I'm feeling super duper speedy with my new DSL connection, I was wondering what people use for firewall protection ?
I have Earthlink and it came with access to ZoneAlarm free firewall software. This software ended up conflicting with my work email so I bought Norton Personal Firewall 2003 @ $ 49.99 US. I thought it was a steep price but I figured they knew how to protect someone's computer.
My work email is no longer in conflict which I guess is worth the $ 50.00. WHat I found fascinating and disturbing was that both softwares would alert me to attempts by someone/thing to intrude. The alerts would then go on to say that most intrusion attempts are by pop-up ads, my DSL provider, etc. Basically innocuous.
But the new Norton software comes with a visual tracker. So after my very first notification of an attempt by someone to get into my computer, the visual tracker gave me the IP address of purported hacker and then a world map with a icon indicating said hackers location. The place was Beijing. The software then spewed out a list of IP addresses, telecom stuff I couldn't understand, and the telcom's name (China Telecom or something close to this).
I hope the attempted instrusion was somewhat innocent. Or did somebody really know I was drinking Tsingtao this evening ?
Anyway, long ramble to say that perhaps the Wombers should be diligient about Net protection.
Cheers,
Matt
