So far it feels really good and just the kinda book I would like. History...and no trash in sight! This book had a small little problem. The fonts in the spine are so small and golden on brown background that it was hard to find it from the library shelf. The spine was definitely too modest to be found by accident. I needed to know what I was looking for.

Next: J.M.G.Clezio - Desert There is no Herta Muller in the shops. At least she wasn´t chosen as a nobelist by evil corporate entertainment industry eager to push their stuff. Her stuff is nowhere to be found! What to do then? Turn to the winner of last year! Readily available in paperback and cheaply. Muller to hold, Clezio to go! Where is the SpotiBOOKS when you need it? If I had that too with Spotify and Spotifilm then everything would be available right there and I would never have to wander the cold streets of the town looking for some stuff...sounds like a boring life...but it´s the future...they tell us... Go for Herta next year once she's been translated to Tagalog, Yoruba and Finnish, and if you remember my words, try to find her book "Niederungen". Frighteningly brilliant stuff, and pretty small book packed with amazing imagery. Parenting "issue" books, no fun but necessary. I need to read something light and fun next.

Have you read any Michael Chabon? Everyone here seems to have enjoyed his book Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. My wife just finished another of his books, The Yiddish Policemen's Union, which she also enjoyed (although not as much as Kavalier). Looking through our bookshelves now I'm reminded that Rohinton Mistry's A Fine Balance is lovely. I really enjoyed Dreams Of My Russian Summers by Andrei Makine. Going back a bit, Diderot's Jacques The Fatalist is a hilarious and pretty quick read. Monique Truong's Book Of Salt is nice too. Anyway, good luck making use of the parenting material and I hope you find some enjoyable fiction to help take your mind off other things. I'm over half way through Powell's Dance To The Music oOf Time now and it's so much better than I expected! I'm taking a break from it for a bit, however, to read a book I heard about recently, entitled Our Band Could Be Your Life. It's about the independent music scene in the US in the 1980s. I'm not that keen on rock music books in general, but this one is really quite good. It's a history of much of the music I grew up listening to, so I'm obviously somewhat biased. I don't know that it would have much appeal to people who didn't listen to punk ... and maybe the author oversimplifies things too much and indulges in a bit of sloganeering. It was labeled as a comedy about quitting smoking but it was actually disturbing shit about the third world. A bit mixed feelings about this one. Now I have also gotten a copy of Herta Muller´s Heart Animal (Hertztier) as they expectedly did a rerun here. She had 3 books translated to finnish and all those did a fast return to shops. I can´t read german well enough so I had to go for those. She didn´t have anything on english and paperback. That one next. Hertztier was the thickest one, so I thought that I would get more for the same price by picking up that instead of her other books that were considerably slimmer. I am just about finished with Powell's Dance to the Music of Time. I'm happy to say I've read it. 3/4th of it was great, but I must admit that the last 200 pages are dragging. I have a little baby at home now too and he's probably keeping me from finishing. Before the birth I had this idea that in the next year or so I'd be able to read Musil and Proust while the baby sleeps. But now I think I'm going to have to sleep while the baby sleeps... Will I ever get my life back? If I ever do, maybe I'll read something more lighthearted for once.

I was kind of expecting that the skies would open up, sun would shine and birds flying. One of the biggest mysteries of the book for me was that there was no animals. In the end people had to be cannibals or eat canned food but I was expecting some animals to show up. It was probably the biggest flaw in the story as there was only people. The animals, birds and fishes can´t disappear like that and leave only humans. Of course the cannibalism aspect served the story better but still it got me thinking. The image of the son staying with his father's cold, dead body for 3 days was tough. I think the reader was supposed to surmise that 99.9% of human and animal life was gone. There was a dog in one passage. But you're right. I imagined the post-apocalyptic Earth to be a feast for cockroaches and rodents... So, have you seen the animated post-apocalypse film '9' yet? It was just released to DVD two days ago. Love it! across the endless sky we are deployed

Cool!! Right people, right stuff! In hindsight, it was a good book! after reading embers, i expected another great book. instead, i got a masterpiece. i will read all and everything by Márai available in my teutonick mozzer tonk!! funny, shocking, frightening, elegant, mad, original - all you could expect from a book!! read it, chrome!! nice thriller with nice n slow pace, and a fine unreliable narrator. light n easy stuff, still good! next on: devoured the first 60 pages yesterday, when i was actually already sleeping - very very good! ...because strange is what we need The Fandorin Foto Files
