I feel like the fat wheezy unpopular kid who didn't know all the cool kids were smoking grass behind the bike shed. Thanks to disciple for letting me know
where you all were...
To bring my thoughts on 23 into one place (for my own benefit really), here's my first post on the subject from a couple of weeks ago: _______________________________________________ Okay, got the album. One listen. First impressions: 1. I was right about the EPs. Didn't quite 'get' Pangea but get it now. It's an album song. Ditto Happenstance. The other EP tracks wouldn't fit at all here. 2. There are no hits. None at all. Forget about it. 3. The album is a grower. One listen is certainly not enough, but I now recognise the difference between a genuine grower and 'tolerable with time'. 4. Good length. Well under an hour and only ten songs. Well conceived, well constructed. Tight is right, but spacious, spacious... 5. Quick calculation (nearly enough): 3 songs very good; 4 songs great; 3 songs utterly outstanding (but which is which, eh viewers?) 6. Without a doubt the best album of the Powles era. No doubt in my mind at all. In other words, easily the best album by The Church in 17 years. Makes me feel glad to be alive and growing old. Hallelujah. _______________________________________________ ...and my second post about a week later - more a prompt to get people off the fence (what fence?): _______________________________________________ Singles? None. Nothing really strikes me as single-y. Not that kind of a record. The Coffee Song. Why not? Anyway. Here's a question for you all... Pre-Space Saviour or Post-Space Saviour? This track marks a kind of turning point in the album, a gear shifter. So which gear is your favourite? The first suite of songs: Cobalt Blue, Dead Man's Hand, Pangaea, Happenstance, Space Saviour (a kind of Sativa buzz for me); or The second suite of songs: On Angel Street, Sunken Sun, Anchorage, Lunar, Operetta (a much more heavy Indica feeling, if you will). Okay, so that's a bit arbitrary and artificial. So what? I am loving this record and want to find more ways of talking about it. _________________________________________________ ynnpr is distinctly Post, apparently. I'm still on the fence. Jean, Altres, Vlad and Fando (and others!), thank you for your considered, articulate appraisals thus far... more to be said... v |

I disagree with No 2, Verdelay. Hits are created by radio stations, the heavies (record labels) and the listening public. There are hits on this album given
the chance, given some solid airplay.. but of course i know what you mean.
Which song would you choose out of these gems? Operetta, Happenstance, Sunken Sun, On Angel Street, Deadman's hand? Hard choice. |

Flame on old .sausage.com people, but I think "untitled" should have been left untitiled and scrapped for the archives, like "A Quick Smoke" To me, this is the biggest disappoint since MATS. Forget Yourself, at least to me, is the greatest album of all time, not just of The Church, but of all time. Univited has my favorite song, Block, and I love "Deadman's Hand", but to say this is their best album is a complete misrepesention of the supremacy of the Church. Maybe eveyone has stuck a needle too much or smoked too much hash, but I am ashamed to say to people who don't know the Church that this is NOT the album to convince them of Kilbey's brilliance. What is worse, there is only 1 good song. At least with ULTS we had "Block," Easy", and "Space Needle" Furthermore, if you think about all the opening songs from them: "myhhr, destinatiion, pharoah, aura, drought, day of the dead, numbers, block, even "Comedown" , all are better than Cobalt. One thing that separates The Church from other bands is the aura of their albums, whcih is precipitated by the first song. . Cobalt is a sepreme disappointment. If they had opened with Deadman my opiinion may be different, but to me, this album is dead. Like I said, FLAME ON |

Um...ok. My advice is you should listen to their other albums instead. No point in being unhappy when you don't have to be.

I listen to all their albums all the time, especially when I ride my bike
There is nothing better than getting stoned out of my mind and then cycling 100 km while listening to
1. Bastard 2, Jammed 3. Heyday.Starfish, or P = A. I hate knocking the Church, but this album sucks. |

That´s a refreshing and good view, Tar Heel. Give it some space and maybe you feel better about it later on. It´s not a shame to later say that you find some
good points there. Many The Church-albums can be disappointing at first.
I feel that Deadman´s Hand is perhaps the least interesting track here because it´s so predictable. It´s quite clear what happens after listening to the first 15 seconds. I don´t really care for songs that are based mostly on one simple riff. It´s too simple here and this kind of song could be done by numerous uninventive bands that can´t really construct a memorable melody, for example Editors. Bands that pretend they can make a song but there is just a pile of guitar solos, synths and stuff and there really is nothing below the surface, just something that resembles a song. Deadman´s Hand is still better than everything I´ve heard from Editors. Editors try so much to have passion and meaning but it´s just empty bluff. But when Pangaea starts then it´s the start of the album properly for me... |

i disagree strongly. when you use the word "sucks" to describe the album, what exactly does that mean? it seems a very harsh adjetive for anything
this band puts out. i realize and embrace the fact that i'm a church fanboy but i have (i think) enough of a discerning ear to determine what is high
quality and what is shit. i understand that opinions are like assholes and that everyone has and are entitled to them but by which criterior does untitled
suck?
i haven't shared my opinions on the album yet for a few reasons. firstly, there are far more attractively verbose reviews already here and my limited reviewing skills will not be able to shed any more light on the album than is already here. secondly, i like to have a bit of time with my church/kilbey releases for my thoughts, opinions, feelings to come into more focus. all that being said, i can not declare it the "greatest" church album. i can not choose any one church album greater than others. i have favorites but they change like the seasons. untitled is still to fresh for me but i suspect over time it will be a favorite as most become (fwiw, jammed and bastard universe, while unique, in no way competes with their "regular" releases). the album itself sets a mood, doggedly follows its own course and delivers on what was promised and set in 'cobbalt blue'. it flows so seamlessly, fits as a whole so nicely that it somewhat transcends a normal album of tracks (another fwiw, painkiller feels the same way to me). while not a concept album as usually defined, it feels like one in temperment and style. in every way that is important to me, it is a resounding success. just thinking about the album brings a smile to my face, gives me hope, pleases me that music this good, of this quality still exists. the band has never been more on point. as for the earlier criticism of ultc, i disagree (again). i love that one for it's eclectisism, different styles, different textures. i find myself still often listening to it, as i do with all of the post 98 releases. you guys with the great literary skills (fando, vlach, altres to name a few off the top of my head, theres more).....excellent stuff and very enjoyable to read. |

dear tar heel,
'Bastard Universe' and 'Jammed' are two of my favourite records ever too......... brave, bold statements that i have found inspiring. cutting-edge stuff indeed. a fine choice (along with FY) as your prime church collections. but you should never have pre-concieved notions regarding new church releases, there's some very fine songwriting on u#23......'on angel st.' in particular, for a real fan to 'dis' a song (or indeed collection of songs) with such obvious emotional clout suggests that perhaps a closer listen is in need? having said that.....i remember hearing 'starfish' upon it's initial release and thinking, 'is that it?' i now consider it to be essential. i think it good that people respond honestly here though tar heel, so there'll be no flaming from me! my personal opinion is that it IS their most consistently good album ever, though not their overall best. the overall BEST church album is the one you compile yourself! sue 'n holly......... your special mentions on the sleeve are richly deserved.....much love to you both. www.myspace.com/dudesofneptune www.myspace.com/theotheralien |

To Heyday2day - I would say that what I mean by "sucks" is that I don't like it and that I don't think it is good, considering we've all
been waiting since the summer o f'05 for new material.
Chrome3D does not like my favorite song on this album "Deadman's Hand". So, we all have different opinions, but I think most people on this forum agree that The Church is the best band that will ever exist (with the exception of The Beatles, of course! :-) ) |

well, I still haven't heard it yet. My copy will arrive in about a week.
but this thread is really getting me excited. Tar Heel seems to be the only one so far that isn't exactly impressed with #23 and I think that is great! Tar Heel's comments remind me of ULTC. I really liked it at first but it wore on me quick and I don't even listen to most of that album anymore. I have taken Block and Pure Chance from that album and put them on my church mix but I really just don't like the rest of that album very much. But, I would never ever say it "sucks". I reserve that word for albums by "meat loaf" and "poison" or "poison meatloaf" even. |

#23, Untitled 23, w/e I listen to each of these songs and they stand on their own, pure music. There is no premade album promo with awesome band photos or
prints of a image long gone.
The album is for the music, no pretense or being bound to try and fit the theme of an album concept. Pangea as a back drop and number on the album, its does at tthe very least give the listener the impression that the musical landscape is born again, Pangea is in your head, and it becoming wonderful things, songs and thought unto themselves. I declare for untitled 23 to be The Church at its best. So I get, no album title could hold these songs down.. |

neverness wrote: thats kind of what i was saying. "suck" is a heavy label to lay onto anything by the church and completely undeserved according to my definition of "sucks". tar heel, i understand that you don't dig it, but sucks? there's alot of stuff out there that i don't like but completely respect the efforts and merits of what they are trying, thus they don't suck it's just not to my taste. portishead for example. it doesn't do much for me but i would never say they suck. on the other hand, 80% of what is played on pop radio i find artistically uninspiring, tiresome, spirit crushing, etc...thus they "suck" according to my definition. that was what i was getting at. |
