An old music hall in Cincinnati, a sweaty dive with a dirt floor in Memphis, an old theatre in Atlanta, a corporate concert hall masquerading as a credible
blues venue in Chicago, an old deco cabaret in Cincinnati; these are all places where I've seen my favorite band. Each show and their attendant journeys
are nice chapters in my story. The most recent chapter was Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a city I've driven AROUND many times but never had cause to visit.
Midway through the shakiest financial year of my life, it seemed unlikely that I would be able to catch the band this tour, but the stars lined up just right
and I was on my way to a city with three rivers and 446 bridges (the most bridges in a city on this side of the world!).

I'm glad Noel beat me to reviewing the show. I can't seem to move beyond the technical writing style that was drilled into my head in college and grad
school. Hooray for science. If scientists reviewed concerts, I doubt many people would be impressed.
Here is the setlist I removed from the stage after the show:
I took a few photos, but they need a bit of Photoshopping before I share them. |

Thanks. 'Operetta' was the brightest star in the set, but they delivered the goods on 'Day 5', 'NSEW', 'Deadman's Hand',
'Pangea', and the old chestnuts too. Sure, as a longtime listener I'd love to hear 'Roman' or some other arcana, but I can still smile and
sway and love hearing 'Almost With You' and 'You Took' (and Pete gets dead sick on YT!). And hey, they trotted out 'An Interlude'
during the encore.

Pittsburgh Travelogue | ||
|
My traveling group left our Cleveland hotel around 10:30 A.M. on Saturday morning and headed toward the Southeast and Pittsburgh.Hitting the Ohio Turnpike and
then the Pennsylvania Turnpike we were making great time.Turned down I-279 and almost immediately were at a standstill because of road construction. The next
few miles took well over an hour to traverse eating up the precious time we had gained. The opposite side of the road was backed up as well and it appeared that
a motorcyclist had either wrecked or been hit by a car.A little farther ahead you could see an ambulance trying to make it's way through the snarl of
traffic and having great difficulty doing it.It kind of put a damper on on the mood in the car and makes you slow down and be more cautious. As we cleared the
construction you start to curve through the hillsides(Allegheny Mountains?) that are lushly green in Summer. As you near Pittsburgh you get an occasional glance
of the city until you hit that last sweeping curve and finally the city comes into view with it's many bridges over the converging rivers. The U.S. Glass
building with it's pointy spires gives the appearance of a castle(or maybe a Cathedral) ahead of you.Crossing a bridge to the city's central district
and then a second bridge put us on the southside of the Monongahela river and near Station Square where our hotel was.The Cleveland show the night before was
all ages so my daughter Kamryn could attend her first Church concert. This was not the case for the show at the Rex Theatre. This made me decide to stay at the
Sheraton in the middle of a real busy tourist area.It was pricey but allowed Becky and Kamryn to be able to do something while Freida and I attended the
evening concert. We had a nice leisurely lunch and then checked into the hotel to get ready for the show.
Freida and I caught a cab for a rather fast and frightening ride to the Rex Theatre. We were there a few minutes before the doors were to open so we walked about five blocks up the street to check out the area.I had done this on my computer with the street view of Google maps, and it made Carson Street look deserted with no traffic(maybe the pictures were taken early in the morning). How different this was to actually being there.People were everywhere, heavy traffic, and barely any empty parking spots.I'm glad I decided to take a taxi and not drive the van.By the time we got back from our jaunt up the street the doors were nearly ready to open.I saw Marty and Tiare walking up the opposite side of the street and he waved to me(must've seen his ol' buddy Chad ).Freida and I went in and I stopped to say hello to Stephen at the
merch table.I don't know if he was resupplied somehow, but he had Swervedriver CDs which I didn't see the night before when helping him cover. Then I
ran into Terri and chatted a few moments before heading into the theatre. After sitting a few minutes,I called Noel to see where he was,and he said he was in
the lobby.I went out to greet him,Allison, and Ann.I was looking forward to seeing Ann again for the first time in about seven years. We had exchanged emails and
phone calls leading up to this get-together.Holly had arrived by this time and I said hello to her. This was the second time I had met Ann(although I guess
Marty's 2000 show was a near miss) and my third time meeting Holly. We went into the theatre and staked out a front and center location just as Adam
Franklin was hitting the stage. His set was loud and distorted and it was really hard to listen to.Vocals were nonexistent in the mix and the bass guitar was
too loud and muddy, swamping out any detail.I'm aware that there is a substitute on bass but the playing was perfunctory at best.I believe there are some
good songs coming out of this band but it was hard to hear it in this situation.Sorry but that's my opinion.
I have to admit that I was worried that the sound was going to be horrible in this venue after the opening act,but that fear dissipated once the Church came on.The sound was loud but clear and clean.I think Noel's description is pretty much spot on,so I will describe what I noticed that was different than the Cleveland show. Tim looked like he felt better than the day before and his playing seemed even stronger than in Cleveland,if that's even possible.Peter was in good spirits, allowing an occasional smile or laugh to break through his air of quiet concentration. He even was clowning around on stage some, putting his hand to his ear and mouthing the word What? when Steve did his introduction so fast it was barely intelligible.Once again Pete's guitar playing was hotter than hot.Marty and Steve were both in fine form again. Steve's voice was sounding a little better than the previous night although it may have been just because I could hear him a little better. His bass playing was solid and agile. From the rapid fire strumming on "Tantalized" to his descending riff on "NSEW" and propulsive bass on "Deadman?s Hand",Marty's playing was explosive. And I still can't get over the fact that Steve plays the cool Blue Oyster Cultish guitar on this song!!Over the two nights I saw the band, I can't really say one night was better than the other as both performances were excellent. The only disappointment of the Pittsburgh show was when the cord pulled out of the Jazzmaster on "Space Savior" and there was trouble getting it reconnected. This caused Steve to leave the stage early out of frustration and not being there to sing the final lines that make the unusual vocal effect happen at the end of the song.He seemed over it and composed for the encore(s) and they were pulled off without a hitch. This was an especially fun show getting to watch it with Ann,Terri,Holly,Freida,Allison and Noel. It's a shame we had such a short time together as a group. After the show,Steve,Marty and Tim were in the lobby posing for photos, chatting, and and signing autographs. It was nice to see Steve with Ann,Freida, and Holly.I nearly lost it when the first thing Steve asked Noel was about the unbuttoned shirt pose. !He signed a few of the Artcards I purchased but I don't think he recognized
me from the previous night. He did recognize Freida though, and gave her a hug.I spoke to Marty a little more but I'm dissapointed I didn't get to say
hello to Tim.We've had some nice conversations in the past but it seems the opportunity didn't arise this time as he was surrounded by a throng of
people.Eventually Noel,Allison, and Ann said good night to return to their hotel.Holly and I went to the merch table to help Stephen by counting shirts and
helping him pack up.The three of us and Marty(hard workin' rocker that he is) carried the boxes to the trailer.Spoke to Tiare a few moments about her
excellent EP and last years Cleveland Mood Maidens show and Marty asked if I planned on going to on Falls Church.I told him that I wouldn't be and would be
spending Sunday sightseeing with my family.I mentioned that my daughter saw her first Church concert and he said it's good to start them young. He then said
See you next time and shook my hand.Holly,Freida, and I started up the street, ran into Stephen Judge and said good bye to him.I then hailed a cab for us and we
went back to our respective hotels.
On Sunday the family(Freida included) rode the Monogahela Incline, had a nice lunch, some wonderful ice cream on Mount Washington and took a tour of Pittsburgh on the amphibious"duck" craft. We then got in the car and had a pretty and uneventful ride home going through West Virginia and a little bit of Ohio before getting home to Kentucky. It was tempting to go on to see one more show, but I don't know. This may not make sense, but if I could know before the trip that I only had three more chances to see my favorite band,I would want one of them to be the next time...John Black |

Who needs Pucci when you're sipping scotch whisky with two beautiful women?
