About me
46 yo living in Brighton, UK (the seaside town, sorry city, with the pebbly beach!)
First time I heard the Church
In the 80s there was a TV show called the Whistle Test and they did a best of special on New Years Eve. 1st Jan 1983 I watch the tape of the previous nights show while nursing my hangover and they had a video of some Aussie band playing something called The Unguarded Moment. Bought the 7" the following week. I still have it.
Went to see them a couple of times at the old Marquee club on Wardour Street and I remember turning up at the Town and Country Club (now the Forum) in London only to find it was cancelled (Marty had gone AWOL somewhere in Europe, he eventually turned up and I went to the rescheduled show.) I drifted away after GAF (see below) but bought HOB after reading a good review and have not looked back. They just keep getting better!
A highlight for me were the UK dates for ULTC - they played Brighton, my home town for over 20 years on my birthday! Obviously I went to the London show a few days later as well. I remember the early shows they played everything so fast - listen to a bootleg of an early 80s show and Almost With You sounds like speed metal compared to the album. Now they sound great.
Controversial Fact
I don't like P=A. I'm sorry OK, I know you all love it but it left me cold when it came out and it was 6 years before I started listening to them again.
Untitled#23
I love it. I was a bit miffed there was no UK release date (not sure if there is one now) so I ordered the tour CD/T-shirt deal from ChurchMerch. First couple of plays I was a bit disappointed - no one song jumps out at you. Now I can't stop playing it - a great album. I liked ULTC a lot - the first 5 tracks are pretty untouchable and Day 5 is marvellous but U#23 is just strong all the way through.
Here's hoping...
They do some UK shows soon-ish. I will be there and hopefully meet some of you there too.
Steve
