Being an avid reader of Speculative Fiction I had nevertheless not heard of Jeff VanderMeer until The Church did their pretty experimental album Shriek: Excerpts From The Soundtrack for VanderMeer's novel Shriek. I haven't read that one so far, but I tried his latest work, the Southern Reach trilogy, starting with Annihilation. And it turned out to be fantastic. Especially the first book. The story is pretty weird (the sub-genre it is in is called New Weird), and it's a real page-turner. Big recommendation if you like atmospheric writing, great characters and don't get upset if there are more questions than answers once you've finished it. Anyone else read it?
